AKAMIZUGAMA
CHIHARU KUMAMOTO
Kumamoto was born in Karatsu City, Saga prefecture in 1949.

Karatsu city is famous for " Karatsu-Yaki" is general name for the glazed,
high-fined pottery made at kilns. It is believed to have started in the 16th century in
Saga prefecture, greatly influenced by Korean potters.
Kumamoto graduated in 1972 from Kyshu Sangyo Univercity. There, He majored in design in
the art department. After graduation, he worked as a ceramic art teacher at the Tottori
prefecture welfare work organization  before opening his own Kiln Studio called " Karatsu-
Ya" in 1976 in kagami akamizu, karatsu -city, Saga.

In 1990, Kumamoto named his kiln
"AKA MIZU GAMA".

His work has been selected repeatedly for the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition(NITTEN) and the
Japan Craft Arts Exhibition (NIKKOUKAI TEN).
He also has received numerus awards including the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology award.

He believes enjoying his art work will always lead him to new ideas for his own unique pottery
styles. He continues to create his original "Karatsu-Yaki" in his home town Karatsu City.
